TEHRAN (AFP) — The presence of US forces in Iraq is the country's main problem, Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told visiting Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki on Monday.
Khamenei's comments in a meeting with Maliki come amid Iranian alarm over a mooted agreement between Baghdad and Washington that would keep US soldiers in the country beyond 2008.
"The most fundamental problem of Iraq is the presence of the foreign forces," Khamenei said, according to state television.
"We are certain that the Iraqi people will pass the difficult circumstances and reach the status they deserve. For sure, the American dream will not be materialised," he added.
