Bush hails 2008 US Olympians

WASHINGTON (AFP) — President George W. Bush on Tuesday hailed US Olympians, including swimming sensation Michael Phelps, in a light-hearted White House celebration of their gold medal haul at the Beijing Games.

"People say, 'did you ever get to meet Michael Phelps?' I said I did. 'So that was the highlight?' I said: 'Not really. Meeting his mother was more of a highlight. She reminded me of my mother,'" Bush said to laughter from the athletes gathered on the mansion's sun-soaked South Lawn.

Bush also expressed disappointment over the absence of beach volleyball champions Kerri Walsh and Misty May-Treanor -- and joked about May-Treanor's recent injury as she took part in the television show "Dancing With the Stars."

"I'm just so sorry that Misty May got injured," said the US president. "God, if only she had me as a partner, you know? Except I can't dance."

Bush lavished praise on US gymnasts, softball and basketball players, as well as the men's champion beach volleyball players, and expressed disappointment at missing the Paralympic games.

"Long after we leave the White House, Laura and I will remember the extraordinary spirit and kindness of the athletes that we have met here at the White House and in Beijing," said Bush, who leaves office in January.

"You amazed the world with your talent and grace and sportsmanship. You inspired children to chase their dreams. You will be champions forever. May God bless you, and may God bless America," said the US president.
