Maggert withdraws from PGA event after brother's death

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Florida (AFP) — US veteran Jeff Maggert withdrew from the PGA Players Championship after his older brother Barry died in an airplane crash in Colorado.

Maggert told officials of the nine million-dollar event that he was pulling out Thursday after learning of the death.

The elder Maggert was flying to see his 23-year-old son Lee's graduation from the University of Colorado on Friday when the plane crashed 40 miles west of Denver.

Jeff Maggert, who has won three PGA titles, fired a par 72 in Thursday's opening round of the Players Championship, six strokes off the first-day pace set by Spain's Sergio Garcia.

Maggert, 44, has not finished better than 23rd in any event this season, with four missed cuts. His most recent tour title came at the 2006 St. Jude Classic.
