Japan nominates BoJ deputy as central bank chief: report
TOKYO (AFP) — Japan's government Monday nominated Bank of Japan deputy Masaaki Shirakawa as the next central bank chief, seeking to end a political deadlock over the key post, public broadcaster NHK and other media reported.
The government also proposed Hiroshi Watanabe, a former top finance ministry official, to replace Shirakawa as deputy governor, media said.
There was no immediate confirmation of the reported nominations, which were made during a closed-door session of parliament.
The opposition rejected the government's first two nominees for Bank of Japan governor, arguing that they were too close to the finance ministry to preserve the independence of the central bank.
