Google maps to be on fuel pumps to help lost drivers

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) — Beginning next month drivers having trouble finding their ways on US roads will be able to consult Google maps on displays built into fuel pumps, pump-maker Gilbarco Veeder-Root announced Wednesday.

Gilbarco's new media system displays color Google maps on petrol station pumps, according to the North Carolina-based company. Maps, routes and other information for travelers in need of directions are kept up-to-date with live Internet connections.

"Lost drivers soon will be able to Google for help at the pump," Google spokeswoman Megan Quinn told AFP, saying the maps will debut on thousands of US service station pumps.

Drivers will not be able to type in specific addresses but will be able to pick points on maps or select destinations such as restaurants, hospitals, businesses and popular tourist spots.

Motorists will also be able to print out driving directions to take with them, according to Gilbarco.

"Getting directions at the pump is safer than using Internet-enabled devices from the driver's seat and far more reliable than just asking a stranger," said Gilbarco's vice president of global retail systems Kirsten Paust.

Ads will not be displayed along with maps but station owners will have the option of making deals to have coupons or other promotional material dispensed along with driving directions.
