Abkhazia asks Russia to back independence from Georgia

SUKHUMI, Georgia (AFP) — The parliament in Georgia's separatist region of Abkhazia voted Wednesday in favour of asking Russia to recognise the province as an independent state.

The parliament approved an appeal by the separatist administration's leader, Sergei Bagapsh, calling on Russia to "recognise the independence" of the territory and maintain a Russian "military presence in Abkhazia."
