BUDAPEST (AFP) — A street in the Hungarian capital Budapest has been renamed after Ferenc Puskas precisely one year after the legendary footballer's death.
Around 100 people gathered to mark the name change of the road in the 19th district of the city on Saturday with Budapest mayor Gabor Demszky leading the ceremony.
Hungarian and Real Madrid football icon Puskas, the inspiration of the "Mighty Magyars" national side that dominated world football in the 1950s, died on November 17, 2006, after a long illness. He was 79.
One of the best strikers ever to play the game, with a fearsome left foot, Puskas - known as the "Galloping Major" abroad or "Puskas Ocsi" at home - led Hungary to Olympic gold in 1952, won league titles in both Hungary and Spain and three European Cups with Real Madrid.
Puskas scored a remarkable 83 goals in 84 international matches from 1945 to 1956, when the Hungarian squad was simply known as the "Golden Team."
