Hamas officers disciplined over 2007 rally deaths

GAZA CITY (AFP) — Islamist movement Hamas announced on Monday it had disciplined 38 members of its security force in the Gaza Strip over the deaths of seven Palestinians during a rally last November.

The Hamas government in Gaza said in a statement that nine senior officers and 29 other members of the force were disciplined, as recommended by a commission of inquiry.

"The measures range from a reduction of salaries, to suspension of promotions and lay-offs," the statement said.

The commission faulted both the security services and the Fatah movement, Hamas's archrival, which had organised the November 12, 2007 rally to mark the third anniversary of the death of Palestinian leader and Fatah head Yasser Arafat.

Seven Palestinians were killed and more than 100 wounded when Hamas police opened fire on the massive gathering.

Hamas seized power in Gaza last June, ousting forces loyal to moderate Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, of Fatah.
