Cliff Richard follows 'The Young Ones' onto Internet

LONDON (AFP) — Veteran British pop star Cliff Richard is to follow younger acts such as Radiohead by letting fans decide the price of his new album over the Internet, his website announced Tuesday.

Fans of Cliff, whose career dates back to the 1950s and is known for hits such as "Move It," "The Young Ones" and "Living Doll", can order copies of "Love...The Album" through his website ahead of its November 12 release.

The price is initially pegged at 7.99 pounds (11.46 euros/16.50 dollars) but will go down the more people buy the album and could end up selling for as little as 3.99 pounds.

Customers will not be billed for the album until its release date, when the final price will be set.

The sales model is slightly different to Radiohead, who let fans choose what they wanted to pay for their album "In Rainbows", which was released this month.

British band the Charlatans also announced this month that they would be giving away their next album for free over the Internet.

The band's manager Alan McGee said he thought that few people bought compact discs anymore, mostly finding music on the Internet for free.

"I came to the conclusion, 'Why don't we just give it away for nothing?'" he added.
