Canada police hunt for father after mother finds three children slain

OTTAWA (AFP) — A mother returned from buying groceries over the weekend to find all three of her young children slain in their trailer park home in westernmost Canada, media said Monday.

According to reports, the siblings -- a girl and two boys believed to be under 10 years old -- were stabbed to death.

Police in the forestry town of Merritt, British Columbia, said in a statement they are investigating the homicides and are searching for the children's estranged father Allan Schoenborn "as a suspect."

"Schoenborn fled the area prior to the children being found and has not yet been located," said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

"He may be traveling with a large dog (named Van Gogh) and had previously expressed wishes to camp out in the bush with this dog."

The family had lived in the neighborhood for six months, said public broadcaster CBC. The father, whom police say suffered from a mental illness, moved in with them only recently.
