Red Cross repatriates 885 from Ethiopia and Eritrea
ADDIS ABABA (AFP) — The International Committee of the Red Cross said Monday it had carried out a repatriation of 885 people back to Ethiopia and Eritrea, two poor Africa nations still feuding over an arid border outpost.
The ICRC said 835 people crossed from Eritrea to Ethiopia in the northern town of Rama on Friday, with 50 Eritreans arriving home in the same operation on Friday.
The neighbouring countries have expelled thousands of "enemy" nationals since they fought a devastating war over the ownership of the desolate Badme village and other stretches of disputed frontier between 1998 and 2000.
Although an international border panel awarded Badme to Eritrea, Ethiopia has refused to burge, heightening fears of renewed clashes.
