DETROIT, Michigan (AFP) — Slovakian left wing Tomas Kopecky, who played in 77 games this season for National Hockey League leader Detroit, underwent successful left knee surgery, the Red Wings announced on Tuesday.
The 26-year-old European standout had repairs on his torn anterior cruciate ligament performed by physician William Clancy in Birmingham, Alabama.
Kopecky, who scored five goals for Detroit this season, suffered the injury on April 3 against Columbus and will need four to six months to recover, giving him a chance to be ready for the start of next season.
The Red Wings defeated Nashville in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs with round two against an undetermined opponent to begin later this week.
