Prince Charles talks faith with Indonesia Sultan

JAKARTA (AFP) — Prince Charles met the hereditary sultan of the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta to discuss interfaith dialogue on Tuesday in the final major stop of a five-day visit to the country, a report said.

Charles met Sultan Hamengkubuwono X and other members of the royal family at their palace in the city on Java island, state news agency Antara reported.

Hamengkubuwono, who is running for president next year, is regarded as semi-divine by many Muslim Javanese whose Islamic faith is mixed with earlier Hindu and animist beliefs.

Charles has visited forest conservation projects on Sumatra island and met President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Muslim leaders in the capital Jakarta since his arrival in the country on November 1.

The prince's trip to Indonesia is the first time the heir to the British throne has come to the Southeast Asian country in nearly two decades and comes on the back of visits to Japan and Brunei.

Charles will leave Indonesia on November 5.
