EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (AFP) — The New York Giants will make do without Plaxico Burress for a while, suspending the star wide receiver for one National Football League game for insubordination.
Burress, who has 18 catches for 259 yards and a touchdown this season, will miss the Giants' home game on October 5 against the Seattle Seahawks.
Giants general manager Jerry Reese and head coach Tom Coughlin announced the punishment on Wednesday, saying Burress was suspended effective immediately, but the reigning Super Bowl champs have a bye this week.
Reese and Coughlin said Burress had violated team rules and won't be allowed to rejoin the team until October 6.
According to a report on FOXSports.com, the Giants are disciplining Burress for failing to show up for work on Monday and not responding to several phone calls by the team to explain his unexcused absence both Monday and Tuesday.
Burress, who agreed to a five-year, 35 million-dollar contract extension with the Giants earlier his month, won't be paid during the suspension. NFL.com reported that Burress plans to file a grievance against the Giants.
