PARIS (AFP) — US technology giant Hewlett-Packard plans to slash 9,330 jobs in Europe as part of a previously announced three-year plan to reduce its workforce by 24,600, a union source said Thursday.
About 90 percent of the cuts will be made at EDS, Electronic Data Systems, the computer services company HP has just acquired, the source added.
The announcement of the European cuts came during a meeting in London of the works committee for Hewlett-Packard's European operations.
The source added that the HP management did not reveal in which European countries the reductions would occur.
HP on September 15 announced that it would eliminate 24,600 jobs worldwide over the next three years as part of its integration with EDS.
HP, the world's leading computer maker, bought Texas-based EDS in August in a 13.9-billion-dollar deal that aimed to create a global powerhouse in computer services to compete against IBM.
